What is a Field Book?

A field book is a book in which a surveyor or other technician or scientist writes down measurements and other important notes that are taken while in the middle of a job. Field books differ from regular old spiral notebooks and composition notebooks because these are built to be durable. With durability and water-resistance being a major focal point for construction, the field book is perfect for anybody in the surveying / construction industry. Taking notes are very important and the field book allows for perfect note taking under any conditions.

What Are The Most Common Uses for Field Books?

The most common notes taken with field books include details and descriptions for the layout of the field being surveyed, elevations for the survey being taken, quantities of features and materials used, as well as the notations for marking that were used.

The Different Types of Field Books Used in Surveying

There are two main types of field books that are used in the field of surveying. The first one is a Sing Line Field Book. This type of field book contains a single red line that is drawn through the middle of each page. This line acts as the chain line, and the chainages are written on it. ("Chainages" is a term that's used in surveying that refers to a distance measured in meters along an imaginary line, which could be the center line of a road or railway.)

The second type is the Double Line Field Book. It is relatively similar to the single line field book, but instead of a single red line in the center there are two red or blue lines about 1.5 cm apart that go straight down the middle of each page. The space between these two lines represents the chain line and is used for entering changes.

When Should I Use A Certain Field Book

When surveying much larger scale and more detailed dimension job sites, a single line field book would be more convenient. When doing surveying on more ordinary everyday job sites, a double line field book is more common. At the end of the day, the type of field book you use is really all up to preference.

In the field of surveying surveyors use Field Books to record survey data and notes as surveys are being carried out. They often contain notes about buildings and topography, astronomical observations for charting coordinates, boundary marks and other details. Field books are durable and water-resistant to withstand the harshest job conditions. When you're out in the field, it's important to have a reliable Field Book to store all of the data and notes that you take record.  That's why SiteSurv sells Field Books from reliable and trusted brands like Sitepro, Geomax and Sokkia.
