The theodolite is an instrument that can measure both horizontal and vertical angles allowing surveyors to “triangulate” the specific position of objects in a specific area. While the digital and transit theodolite have been used by land surveyors and engineers for decades, they can be used for other purposes as well. SiteSurv offers a wide selection of theodolites from reputable manufacturers in the surveying industries such as David White, North West, Site Pro, Sokkia and Topcon.
What Type of Theodolites are Used and What Do They Do?
There are two types of theodolites, non-digital and digital. The non-digital theodolite is completely manual, and its usage has decreased more and more over the years to the point where you will rarely ever see one in use. On the other hand, digital theodolites are one of the most commonly used pieces of equipment for any type of surveying. Utilizing a screen that displays the horizontal and vertical angles, it provides a clear display to help the surveyor accurately record the measurements needed.
Choosing The Right Theodolite
Theodolites are used in various construction and surveying applications. Electronic theodolites survey land and give precise and accurate angle measurements. They greatly minimize errors by automatically performing mathematical calculations or converting vertical angle measurements. Some of the theodolites we offer also come with an integrated laser pointer and plummet which helps with greater accuracy. Some even have tilt sensors which help for reliable measurements, and built in serial ports which make transferring data much easier. There's plenty of different features that come with different models of theodolites. Knowing what each feature can do for you while on a job can really help not only make the job easier, but can make the job much quicker too.
Theodolites can sometimes be confused with a total station or even an auto level. There are many key differences and you can find them by reading our article on the differences between theodolites and total stations.
